Soil profile consists of three different layers of soil. Horizons are defined in many cases by obvious physical features, mainly colour and texture. The differentiation of soil into horizons is a hallmark of soil formation.

They range from rich, organic upper layers (humus and topsoil) to underlying rocky layers ( subsoil, regolith and bedrock).

This layer is very thin and is usually pretty dark.
